Then my supportive, small group tuition sessions will help!

  • What is a typical group session with Jenna like?

My weekly group tuition sessions are focused around difficult topics on the AQA A Level specification such as Research Methods. I run group sessions for Lower Sixth (Year 12) and Upper Sixth (Year 13) students. Students report that they enjoy group classes; they make and learn from mistakes in a supportive and kind community so that they develop the skills and confidence for the A Level examinations. Sessions include:

  • Simplification and consolidation of complex material

I select challenging areas from the syllabus and provide targeted tuition with engaging graphics and activities to develop understanding of the area. I use examination practice and modelling to scaffold student learning. Sessions are peppered with a variety of thinking and consolidation activities to keep students engaged throughout. Students can ask questions verbally or in the chat box throughout the session.

  • Guidance on exam technique and revision skills including:

    • Question deconstruction with a focus on assessment objectives
    • Analysis of student model answers and examiner marking activities to learn what an examiner looks for
    • Rewriting lower grade exam responses to develop effective evaluation skills
    • Timed examination practice with immediate feedback to improve understanding
    • Independent work task set every session for consolidation
    • Assistance with prioritisation of tasks and time management as appropriate

About Jenna

Hi, I’m Jenna, a qualified teacher with over 16 years of Psychology teaching and tutoring experience. I have a proven track record with results: when working as a head of department in both the state and independent sectors, my departmental results were always in at least the top 10% of departments in the country (In 2022, 40% A-A*, 80% A*-B in a non-selective school). I have extensive experience of working with English as an additional language and SEND pupils which means I can support them effectively.

I have taught thousands of hours of Psychology A Level and spent hundreds of hours marking as an examiner and assessment specialist for UK and international examination boards at both GCSE and A level so I guide my students to understand what examiners are looking for.

I taught research methods at postgraduate level working as an Honorary Lecturer for UCL Medical school. This means I have absolute confidence in teaching research methods which is often a challenging topic for students and teachers alike.

I have been lucky enough to be able to share my expertise with others, delivering professional development courses for teachers in the UK and internationally in my role as a trainer for Cambridge and for trainee teachers as a guest speaker at the University of Exeter.

Over the years I have loved supporting students to reach their full potential in a subject which I am passionate about. My mission is to provide as many students as possible with the individualised support they need to build confidence and overcome their barriers to learning. My tutoring approach is both supportive and challenging, allowing individuals to thrive and be motivated to achieve their very best.

About

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why would I choose group tuition?

Whether to have 1:1 or group tuition is a very personal choice. The Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF) is a charity which combines the results of research studies to find the most effective teaching strategies. They suggest that both 1:1 and small group tuition are effective, especially when the tutor is experienced.

From a student perspective, some students say they feel more relaxed in a group setting and that they enjoy working alongside others. As they are priced lower than my 1:1 rate, my group tuition classes provide a cheaper alternative to 1:1 sessions.

  • Do you provide notes for group sessions?

Yes. Students receive structured activity notes every week via the learning platform and use these throughout the session. They also make excellent revision notes!

  • How long are the group sessions?

60 minutes (with an additional 15 minutes of catch up prior to the session if required).

  • How many students are in a group?

Groups are kept small to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to receive direct help and feedback. I have a maximum of 7 students in a group because research from the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) suggests that once group size increases above this, tuition becomes less effective.

  • What happens if I miss a session?

If you miss a group session, resources are provided to help you to catch up and I offer 15-minute catch up sessions prior to the next group session.

  • Do I have to have my camera on?

Having a camera on is really helpful for me as a tutor, and in group sessions it helps to build rapport with the other students. During the winter students would attend in their onesies looking very comfortable! If there is a reason why your child doesn’t want to have the camera on then they can try with a camera off if this means they can engage with the session.

  • Do students complete past examination questions?

Of course! My group students work on examination questions in our sessions – often two or three!

  • Do you set homework assignments?

Yes, optional independent work is posted on my student portal after every session to consolidate learning.

  • Are there opportunities for feedback on examination answers?

Absolutely! My group students also have the opportunity to present their work in the session and optional independent work for feedback during the group sessions.

  • Is there anything you can’t cover in group tuition?

Group tuition does not cover the ‘options’ for Paper 3 as these vary between schools/colleges. I cover some of these topics in my holiday Masterclasses and support for options topics can be requested on a 1:1 or small group basis outside of the normal tuition class.

  • Do you run sessions in the holidays?

My regular group classes pause during the school holidays (I run to Somerset term times) but my popular Masterclasses run in the holidays to support mock and final exam preparation and revision. I also offer ad hoc 1:1 sessions which can be booked via my parent portal.

  • Can I get extra support outside of group sessions?

Absolutely! If students require additional support that cannot be provided at the beginning or end of a group session then additional 1:1 sessions can be booked by parents through my parent portal.
