Faqs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to do an assessment?

No, but in our discussion before starting tuition I speak to students and parents about strengths and weaknesses. Students can also send pieces of work such as examination papers from school, so that I can analyse performance. To tell me about your individual needs, get in touch.

  • What happens in tuition sessions?

All sessions, both 1:1 and group tuition involve informal assessment, simplification and delivery of content around examination questions and examination practice. My sessions may include quizzes, analysing student model answers, examiner marking activities, or writing exam answers in timed conditions with opportunities for individualised feedback. I apply the principles of effective questioning to give students thinking time and I scaffold to build confidence.

  • How many students are in your group tuition sessions?

Groups are kept small to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to receive direct help and feedback. I have a maximum of 7 students in a group because research from the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) suggests that once group size increases above this, tuition becomes less effective. Read more about group tuition here.

  • What happens if I miss a session?

I ask for 48 hours notice if you wish to change a 1:1 session and I endeavour to reschedule these 1:1 sessions where possible. If you miss a group session, resources are provided to help you to catch up and I offer 15-minute catch up sessions prior to the next group session.

  • Do I have to have my camera on?

Having a camera on is really helpful for me as a tutor, and in group sessions it helps to build rapport with the other students. During the winter students would attend in their onesies looking very comfortable! If there is a reason why your child doesn’t want to have the camera on then they can try with a camera off if this means they can engage with the session.

  • Do students complete past examination questions?

Of course! We usually work on examination questions in our sessions – often two or three!

  • Do you set homework assignments?

Yes, independent work is posted on my student portal after every session to consolidate learning.

  • Are there opportunities for feedback on examination answers?

Absolutely! My 1:1 students get specific feedback on their assignments and we rewrite answers together if necessary. My group students also have the opportunity to present their work for feedback during the group sessions.

  • Do you run sessions in the holidays?

Yes. While my regular group classes pause in the school holidays (I run to Somerset term dates – link) my popular Masterclasses run in the holidays to support mock and final exam preparation and revision. I also offer ad hoc 1:1 sessions which can be booked via my parent portal.

  • How does payment work?

Sessions are invoiced a month in advance. Once a student is registered with me, parents receive access to a Parent Portal where there is a calendar/booking and reminder system as well as easy payment options.

  • Do you offer refunds?

No, I meet with parents and students for a free no-obligation Zoom call to outline how my tuition works and answer questions. If you try an initial session and decide it’s not for you then you can let me know. Once you’ve committed after the trial session parents/carers pay on a monthly basis so there is no long term commitment.
